Wakakirri Success!

In 2013, 45 Heathcote High School students participated in the Wakakirri Secondary School Challenge in place of the cancelled Rock Eisteddfod Challenge. This presented a new opportunity for our students because Wakakirri involved the use of live singing, dancing, acting, props, lighting designs and image projections. This year, we settled on a theme of awareness-educating our audience on the awful disease that is Alzheimer's. Our story was called "Fading Memories" and told the story of a young girl who tried to help her grandmother remember her past by using a series of photographs that were captured at important life moments-a marriage proposal, going to war and having a baby. The high energy of our routine combined with an effective storyline, bright costumes and a killer soundtrack resulted in Heathcote High School being nominated for and winning numerous awards for this performance. For 'Fading memories', we were awarded :

  • A highly commended award for Outstanding Choreography
  • A highly commended award for Best Artwork used on Flats
  • Best Overall Costume Design

An enormous congratulations must go out to all of the students who participated in the challenge. Their behaviour, committment and assistance throughout the entire process, and especially on the day, was phenomenal. A huge thankyou needs to be extended to all of the staff who helped to make our performance happen, including:

  • Mr Mclean and the IA staff for building our sets
  • Ms Leighton, Mrs Rogers (and Ollie) for their assistance on the day
  • Miss King and Miss Cooper for helping with costumes, sets, props, hair, makeup and energy on the day
  • Miss Jones for organising the entire production and putting countless hours into ensuring everything ran smoothly.
